Dublin in the rare auld times

Raised on songs and stories, Heroes of reknown,

On passing tales and glories that once were Dublin Town.

The hallowed halls and houses, the haunting children`s rhymes,

That once were part of Dublin in the rare auld times.

CHORUS

Ring a ring o` Roses, and as the light declines,

I remember Dublin city in the rare auld times.

My name it is Shaun Dempsey, as Dublin as can be,

Born hard and late in Pimlico in a house that ceased to be.

By trade I was a cooper lost out to redundancy,

Like my house that fell to progress me trade`s a memory.

CHORUS

I courted Becky Daitlan, as pretty as you please,

A rose and child of Mary of the rebel liberty.

I lost her to a student lad with skin as black as coal,

When they took of for Birmingham she took away my soul.

CHORUS

Oh the years have made me bitter,

The drink has dimmed my brain,

For Dublin keeps on changing and nothing remains the same.

The Metropole and Phil` are gone, long since shut down,

As the grey unyielding concrete makes a city of my town.

CHORUS

Farewell my Anna Liffey I can no longer stay,

To watch those steel `n` glass cages that rise up along the quay,

My mind`s still full of memories to old to hear new chimes

I`m a part of what was Dublin in the rare auld times.

CHORUS
